Any of those options is acceptable really.

These days there is no hard and fast way to pick an engagement ring. Couples plan this purchase as much as the groom surprises with a ring and proposal.

Couples can pick out wedding bands together and often do.

You can choose them any way you want to, and they don’t have to match.
Your fiancee can choose her wedding ring, or you can choose it for her, or you can choose it together. Same with your wedding ring.
My fiance said that he’ll pick out mine as a surprise, and I’ll pick out his as a surprise. But we’re just browsing for now; we aren’t going to get them until a while.

Traditionally, the man picks the engagement ring he proposes with. Most guy sneakily gather clues on what kind of ring she wants, or asks her friends/mom/sisters ect… to try and get it out of her for him. Others just take a shot in the dark so to speak, and choose a ring he feels she will like with no input from her or her family/friends. Some couples shop for the engagement ring together, but it’s always left me wondering what the guy proposed with? An empty box? And also, what if she falls in love with a ring outside his budget? That would put everyone in an awkward spot. Best to have already selected a ring before proposal.

As for wedding bands, most couples do shop for those together. Some couples want ones that match, other couples do not have similar tastes in jewelry and pick rings they like individually that don’t match. Many women’s engagement rings are sold with a wedding band included, so if you pick a set like that, you will just go shopping for your wedding band. There are even sets out there of 3 matching rings, her engagement ring and wedding band, as well as a matching mens wedding band. If you choose one of these sets, there is no need to shop for wedding bands. These types of “sets” tend to be less expensive with smaller and lesser quality stones, and most are in lower karat (aka 10k) gold. Nothing wrong with it, but you just won’t find a more upscale 3 piece wedding set, but if your on a budget and don’t mind matching rings, they do save you some money on buying all the rings as a set rather than separately.

Every couple is different and you will figure out what feels right for you. If you are communicating and know that you will be getting engaged, you can go shopping together. They don’t have to match, but some couples do that.

It helps to look in more than one place because prices vary a lot. We found the same thing for a lot less at a different shop after I left the first place because we couldn’t afford it. We had to wait for them to make the ring, so he picked it up and chose the day of the proposal – it was still kind of a surprise and I didn’t see the actual ring until that day.

Most couples are doing it together, online. You can get men’s and women’s matching wedding bands from http://www.tungstenworld.com
